The problem of exploding fuel tankers is no stranger to Nigerians but it is always scary as it never ends well and lives and property are mostly wasted. A fuel tanker exploded at mile 12 of the Lagos Wharf area. The incident is said to have happened around 3 p.m. yesterday in the municipal parking lot.

As seen in video clips, many vehicles were burnt as members of the state fire department tried to put out the fire while people ran for their lives.

Dr. Olufemi Oke Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergencies Agency, said the agency responded immediately after receiving a call informing them of the incident. Oke Osanyintolu noted that they did everything they could to prevent the spread.

He said: “Upon the arrival of the agency’s response team to the scene, a fire incident involving a fuel tanker and barrels was noted. LRT, LRU along with Lagos Fire and Federal Fire are currently battling the inferno to contain it.”

According to Ogabi Olajide, HR said in a statement the incident was avoidable.

He said: “Preliminary investigations have determined that the avoidable disaster resulted from welding work on the diesel tanker resulting in an explosion. The fire affected a whole range of tankers, peddlers, and storage tanks and drums of various sizes, all filled with diesel.”

“The public is hereby assured that the situation is under control as the fire has stopped spreading and poses no further threat.”

Luckily no lives were lost
