Due to alleged tax evasion, Spanish prosecutors are requesting an eight-year prison sentence as well as a €24 million (£20 million) punishment from Shakira. The Colombian musician is accused of neglecting to pay tax totaling €14.5 million (£12 million) between 2012 and 2014. Shakira turned down a settlement proposal earlier this week. There is no definite date for the trial. In a statement, Shakira’s team said that the singer is absolutely certain of her innocence and considers the situation to be a violation of her rights. The celebrity was charged with tax evasion in 2018. Despite declaring another location as her official address, according to the prosecution, she lived in Spain between 2012 and 2014.

For tax purposes, individuals who stay in the nation for more than six months are regarded as residents. Shakira claims that she did not at the time reside mostly in Spain. According to a document from the prosecution, Shakira purchased a home in Barcelona in 2012 that she and her ex-partner, Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué, made their family home. If the singer is found guilty, it demands a €23.8 (£20 million) fine and an eight-year prison term. We don’t know the specifics of the first settlement offer she declined. According to Shakira, she paid back the money plus interest that the government claimed she owed. A tax bill from all of her worldwide income throughout the applicable time, not only that made in Spain, was required by officials. For tax purposes, she designated Spain as her home country in 2015.

In a different case, the Spanish national court punished her ex-husband Gerard Piqué €2.1 million (£1.8 million) in 2019 for tax evasion between 2008 and 2010. Early in June, the couple announced their separation. The 11-year relationship between Shakira, 45, and Piqué, 35, produced their two sons, who are now 7 and 9 years old.
