The Third Mainland Bridge Reopens After Rehabilitation.

The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will be reopening today, after being shut down for rehabilitation works on a few sections of the ever-bustling bridge on Sunday, between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm.

Before the state government’s intervention to rehabilitate the failed and peeled asphaltic sections identified in the 11.8-kilometer-long bridge, it was found that some sections were riddled with potholes on both sides of the bridge.

In a moving vehicle, the lagoon water could be seen through openings on the expansion joints.

The Director of Highways, Bridges, and Design, Federal of Works and Housing, Engr. Oluropo Oyetade, reacting to the situation said:

“I have asked the Controller of Works to assess the bridge and send me the report. I cannot say anything for now until I have the report. I promise to call you for my comment when I have the assessment report”.

Remember that sometime in 2021, the former National Publicity Secretary of the Action Democratic Party, -ADP, Prince Adelaja Adeoye, had urged the Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola, to repair the potholes on the Lagos Third Mainland bridge.

Adeoye additionally added that while the federal government was working on the strength and thrust of the bridge to prevent likely disasters, the bridge should have been resurfaced so that the repair work would be done once and for all as the repairments had been due for maintenance long ago.
