The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Akwa Ibom State Command, has destroyed 2.768 tonnes of illicit drugs estimated at more than 2 billion naira in the state. The State Government has praised the anti-narcotic agency and has vowed to support its efforts towards the attainment of zero case profile in illegal drug-related crimes in Akwa Ibom and the country at large.

This news was issued in a statement on Thursday by the press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Ekikere Umoh, after the NDLEA chairman, Brig. General Mohammed Marwa, (retd), paid a courtesy visit to the deputy governor, Moses Ekpo, at the Government House, Uyo.

Mohammed Marwa, represented by the agency’s Secretary, Barr. Shadrach Haruna noted that the destroyed drugs included cannabis Sativa, cocaine, heroin, and other psychotropic substances. Meanwhile, the drugs had been seized between 2014, till September 2021.  The illicit drug destruction was in line with the NDLEA Act which directs the agency to take measures for the destruction of seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Haruna additionally revealed that the agency had launched a 24/7 toll-free call line for the general public who may need aid on drug-related matters.

In the fight against illegal drugs, the chairman had requested a parcel of land from the state government for the erection of a staff barracks for the agency command and to establish Drug-free Clubs in schools to reduce the menace of the drugs.
