The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been ordered to stop its seven-month strike by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN).

The order came after a federal government attorney’s request for an injunction was granted.

James Igwe, the attorney representing the federal government, had requested an interlocutory order to stop ASUU from continuing the strike while Chris Ngige, the minister of labor and employment, considered the referral.

Justice Polycarp Hamman ruled in favor of the government on Wednesday in Abuja.

He also rejected Femi Falana, counsel for ASUU, who argued that the court should give an accelerated hearing for the referral Mr. Ngige had already filed rather than dismiss the interlocutory injunction..

ASUU started the strike in February after claiming that the federal government had broken prior agreements over things like increased financing for universities and higher salaries for teachers
