The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Sunday, October 2nd, cried out about the scourge of floods in Nigeria. Floods had been wreaking havoc in villages and displaced thousands of people across Nigeria since the year’s rainy season began.

The National Emergency Management Agency -NEMA, had recently announced that more than 300 people had died and 500 others more, gravely injured in floods this year.

NEMA’s Director-General, Mustapha Ahmed, who reported this at an emergency technical meeting regarding flooding in Abuja, remarked that over 100, 000 people had been displaced from communities across the country.

Obi, who reacted to the development through a series of Twitter threads on his official handle, decried the problem of floods in various states in the country.

The former governor of Anambra State had charged the Federal Government to address the problem.

He had tweeted: “The level of damage caused by the ravaging floods in Kogi, Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Niger States and in the different riparian belts of the country, is very distressing. The untold hardship, loss of lives and properties occasioned by the flooding remains of great concern.”

“While we cannot control the volume of rainfall that led to these massive flooding and associated natural disasters, we must highlight the mitigation and resilient measures aimed at protecting lives and properties.”

He concluded the thread with: “I once again urge the Federal and State governments to come to the aid of those affected by the floods and help them back to their feet.”
