Transportation fares in Lagos and its surroundings increased by more than 100% as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, and oil marketers battled to find a long-term solution to the gasoline shortfall.

This occurred as the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, PETROAN, yesterday criticized the DSS’s 48-hour deadline for oil marketers to make Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, better known as petrol, available to Nigerians.

For example, a trip from Badagry to Mile 2 used to cost N400 or N500 but now costs N1000. The trip from Agbara (Ogun State) to Mile 2 used to cost between N300 and N400 but currently costs N700.

The journey from First Gate, also known as Igboelerin Junction, on the LASU-Igando route to Iyana Ipaja, which used to cost N300, now costs N500, while the journey from Igando to Iyana Ipaja, which used to cost N200, now costs N500. The N150 journey from Igando to Egbeda is currently between N300 and N400.

The distance from Igando to First Gate, which was previously N100, is now between N200 and N300. The distance from Igando to Iyana Oba, which was previously between N100 and N150, is now between N300 and N500, depending on road conditions.

Other routes in the city revealed that Egbeda to Oshodi, which used to cost between N200 and N300, now costs between N500 and N600, and during peak moments, it goes up to N700, and Egbeda to Ikeja, which used to cost between N200 and N300, is now N500.

The trip from Cele Along to Ikotun, which used to cost N150, now costs between N500 and N600, depending on the number of people waiting for the bus at the bus stop.

The distance from Cele to Gate, which used to cost between N100 and N150, is now between N200 and N300.

In Lagos State, commercial drivers have entirely phased out N50 and N100 fees because no journey, no matter how short, is less than N200.

Findings in the state’s Ajah region revealed that the distance from Ajah to CMS, which used to be N400 or even N300 at times, is now N1000 flat.

The distance between CMS and Mile 2 used to be between N200 and N400, but it is now between N700 and N100, and the distance between Mile 2 and Vanguard Media Ltd is now N200.
