Tanitoluwa Adewumi, a 12-year-old 2019 chess champion, and his family have finally been granted Asylum in the United States of America.

Adewumi became popular, after winning the New York state chess championship for his division. He and his family arrived in New York as they fled from the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, they, however, have been staying in a homeless shelter, they sought religious asylum after they arrived in the US in 2017.

Speaking on this, Tani’s Father has said that he is relieved and very happy.

Tani himself is very grateful that after a long while of waiting they were finally granted religious asylum

“We feel so relieved. Everybody is so happy,” said Tani’s father, Kayode Adewumi.

“feels amazing because it’s been such a long journey. I’m just grateful that we’ve gotten this opportunity,” Tani said.

This will be a big relief to Tani, as he’ll be able to participate in other tournaments abroad, which he couldn’t when they weren’t granted Religious asylum.

Nigeria has continued to lose talents and intellectuals to other countries, because of the high rate of insecurity in Nigeria, several Nigerians whose talents would be beneficial to Nigeria, have left Nigeria for other countries, where their lives and properties are safe.
