To decrease the number of unmetered power consumers in Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced that six million meters will be installed nationally in the first and second quarters of this year.
It was revealed in a paper from December 2022 that examined how the present administration’s policies have affected the functioning of the power sector and the Nigerian electricity supply industry.
The government claimed in the document, which our correspondent obtained on Sunday from the Federal Ministry of Power in Abuja, that it had successfully carried out a metering initiative following privatization, with one million meters deployed in the first phase of the National Mass Metering Programme.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria were instrumental in developing and putting this scheme into action, according to the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu.
According to Aliyu, when the 700 MW Zungeru Hydropower Plant is finished and inaugurated in the first quarter of 2023, the government would leave the people of Nigeria an additional 4,000 megawatts of generating capacity.
He claimed that the Kashimbilla Multipurpose Dam’s hydropower component was designed and expanded from 6MW to 40MW, and that Phase I of the evacuation infrastructure, which covered 245km, was finished in March 2020.
Takum, Wukari, Rafin Kada, Dounga, and Yandev in the states of Taraba and Benue are connected by 132 kV transmission lines and three substations.
