Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, has threatened to close commercial banks in the state that refuse to accept outdated Naira notes. The warning follows accusations that commercial banks and certain gas stations were refusing to accept old Naira notes as legal tender.
During his re-election campaign in Abeokuta North Local Council, the governor addressed traders at Itoku Kampala Market in Abeokuta yesterday.
Abiodun, who was critical of the banks’ actions, remarked that because the new money was not yet accessible, commercial banks had to take the old notes to alleviate people’s pain. He urged the people to be calm, assuring them that his government was working hard to get the situation under control.
