Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has paused its ongoing strike in Imo for two weeks.

NLC President, Mr. Joseph Ajaero, declared the suspension of the industrial action in a statement made on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the state chapter of the NLC went on strike on March 9 in response to alleged harassment and brutalization of employees by the state government.

The labor congress also accused the state administration of failing to follow previous agreements agreed with trade unions since 2021, including 20-month salary arrears owed to some workers.

Others include non-payment of pensions for several months, non-remittance of check-off dues, and other anti-union acts, according to the NLC.

Ajaero attributed the strike’s two-week postponement to what he called relentless interventions by highly regarded and well-meaning Nigerians from within and beyond the state, as well as commitments from state government agents to make reparations.

He further stated that the suspension of the strike was required to create an enabling atmosphere for residents to exercise their civic duty during the gubernatorial and house of assembly elections on Saturday.

The NLC president further indicated that, if the window of opportunity was not utilized by the state government, congress would be left with no choice but to resume the suspended strike with more intensity.
