In contrast to the 203 people detained during the presidential election, 578 people were detained during the governorship and state assembly elections.

During the general elections in 2023, members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) made over 700 arrests for breaking electoral regulations.

The IGP reaffirmed that the police would work with INEC leadership to ensure that all electoral violators were swiftly and transparently prosecuted, but added that this was also done to advance the police’s goal of sanitizing the democratic environment.

The IGP also criticized political actors that use ethnic profiling to further their interests and advised Nigerians to work toward unity instead.
