Several places in Ethiopia’s Amhara region have been holding protests for the sixth day in a row against a plan to get rid of regional paramilitary forces.

Demonstrators and security forces got into fights, and three cities put in place curfews at night.

Even though there are so many rules, including a ban on public gatherings, protests don’t seem to be stopping.

Multiple towns have held rallies, and there were fights in Debrebirhan, which is 130km (80 miles) north of the capital Addis Ababa and one of the cities where curfews have been ordered.

After many people took to the streets, shots were also fired in the city of Kombolcha.

The Amhara Association of America says that on Monday and Tuesday, government troops shot at civilians and killed them.

The government says that putting the Amhara Special Forces (ASF) and other groups like it from Ethiopia’s 11 regions into the army or police will make a strong, unified force.

But people in Amhara who are against the move say that it will make the area vulnerable to attacks from its neighbors.
