On Sunday, a bus accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway resulted in the deaths of seven people, including two children, who were all burned beyond recognition.

14 additional passengers were injured in the collision that happened at the OPIC region of the roadway in varying degrees.

The event in Abeokuta was confirmed by Florence Okpe, the Federal Road Safety Corps’ spokesman.

Okpe reported that the sole collision, involving a Mazda bus with the license plate BDG993YG, happened at 10:45 on Sunday.

According to the spokesman, there were a total of 22 people engaged in the collision—7 males, 8 females, 4 male children, and 3 female children—out of whom 7 perished and 14 were hurt.

She cited “excessive speed and brake failure that resulted in the loss of control” as the cause of the collision.

Okpe claimed that the car exploded in flames following the collision, killing three of the passengers from burn injuries.

She stated, “The corpses were deposited at Olabisi Onabajo University Teaching Hospital morgue Sagamu while the injured victims were transported to Lagos State Accident Emergency Center, Ojota.”

Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander, expressed sympathy to the victims’ families and gave motorists the advice “to avoid speeding and always conduct a routine vehicle check for good maintenance and replacement of any defect,” according to Okpe.
