Senegalese Stage Protest Against Leader’s Dream

Ousmane Sonko, the Senegalese opposition leader has encouraged the citizens of the country to come out en masse to protest against President Macky Sall’s ambition of seeking a third term in office.

As of the time of filing this report, the incumbent present is set to give a speech -at a later date- to reveal whether he will be in the 2024 Presidential race.

Several legal experts have already stated that Sall’s ambition would violate the Senegalese constitution.

Thousands of protesters had last month, taken to the streets of Senegalese cities after opposition leader, Sonko was sentenced to two years in prison for ‘corrupting the youth’ in the country.

An act that was tagged sabotage by political analysts and Sonko’s supporters who had opined that the case was an attempt to block Sonko from running in the 2024 presidential election.

The clashes that occurred from that act had been the bloodiest in recent memory.

Sonko had given a statement on Sunday, July 3, saying that if the president indicates interest of running for a third-term bid, then it would become imperative on for every Senegalese to stand up to him.

The Senegalese constitution limits its presidents to two terms in office but Mr Sall’s supporters have argued that this law should be reset because a new constitution had been adopted in 2016.

Lets not forget that an attempt at a third-term bid in 2012, by the then incumbent President, Abdoulaye Wade had immersed the country into violence, resulting to about 12 deaths.

This is a show of freedom, as the citizens of the country are able to stage a protest and voice out their anger towards any development that they find distasteful.
