Amnesty International Ghana has criticised lawmakers in the country for unitedly supporting a redrafted anti-LGBT bill that is striving to impose a three-year jail term on people identifying as LGBT.
Ghana’s parliament had supported amendments to the bill, meaning that people who advocate for LGBT rights could risk facing up to 10 years in prison.
But the director for Amnesty Ghana Genevieve Partington, has revealed that the bill would infringe on the rights of the citizens even though it is yet to be made law.
She had also remarked upon the fact that since she was a supporter of the LGBTI community, she faced the risk of spending several years in prison.
The human rights organisation had then concluded their condemnation by opining that the time had come for the West African country to begin accepting people from the LGBT community.
As expected, this news brought about mixed reactions from netizens, some of who were glad about the bill, claiming that Africa was preserving its culture and identity.
