Ogun State Assembly Approves Public Holiday for Traditional Worshippers

The Ogun State House of Assembly has approved a resolution declaring every August 20 as Isese-Cultural Day. The House of Assembly also requested that the day be declared work-free in Ogun State.

The resolution was passed after a brief discussion by state lawmakers, which resulted in a motion being moved by Majority Leader Yusuf Sherif and seconded by Minority Leader Lukmon Adeleye. Then on Tuesday, July 11, during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, members, including the sponsor, Adegoke Adeyanju, had endorsed the announcement of August 20 as a public holiday for traditional worshippers.

In their separate contributions, the lawmakers had commented that the resolution was directed at propagating the rich culture and tradition of the state, and preserving it for a long time.

The Assembly members had also agreed that the resolution would help support tourism and the uniqueness of the state’s culture and traditions.

Oluomo had however, explained that declaring a public holiday was the sole responsibility of the Federal Government.

Recall that the National Council of Iseselagba (Traditional worshippers) had called out to the Nigerian government sometime in April 2023 to designate a public holiday for them, as both Muslims and Christians in the country all had special dates mapped out for them to celebrate their religion.
