President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on food security in a bid to address the present food inflation crises in the country.

Long-term, medium and immediate, interventions have been designed by the government to fight the shortages in food.

These interventions range from supplying fertilisers and grains to farmers and households to allocating the responsibility for food and water to the National Security Council.

The federal government had also revealed its plans to allocate funds from the fuel subsidy removal to shore up the agricultural sector and establish a National Commodity Board to regulate food prices.

President Tinubu had remarked these initiatives will tackle the ever increasing food prices, and enhance agriculture, as well as boost job creation.

Tinubu had also assured Nigerians that no one would be exempted, in the struggle to ensure that food stuffs were available and affordable for every Nigerian.

President Tinubu’s declaration is coming after the International Monetary Fund, IMF had warned of increased food prices and risks due to floods and expensive fertilisers. Also there is the added risk of transporting food items across the nation owing to the insecurity in the country.

One can only hope that this new enterprise by the Nigerian government is successful and has already been well thought out and planned.

Already, food prices have soared across the nation, with tomato products being too costly for the average Nigerian to purchase in the market.
