Somalian authorities have apprehended a handful of military officers for reportedly aiding a suicide bomber gain access to a military academy in the capital city, Mogadishu this week killing about 30 soldiers, according to a report by an officer on Wednesday, July 26.

The Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group, has since been waging an insurgency against the Somali national government since 2006. It has since claimed responsibility for the attack at the Jale Siyaad military academy.

The ambush had been one of the most destructive, the group had carried out in years against a military target located in Mogadishu.

Captain Hussein Farah had revealed that Colonel Abdullahi Dabow, an infantry operations officer, had been among those apprehended and charged with bringing the suicide bomber into the academy in his car.

Captain Farah had however, not mentioned any other names involved in the attack, asides from Dabow’s, .

A lot of Somalians have since surmised that al Shabaab operatives have infiltrated parts of the government and military, but arrests have been infrequent until recently.

Over the past couple of months, authorities have apprehended dozens of police and military officers suspected of assisting al Shabaab to carry out its attacks against soldiers and civilians.

The central authorities have yet to comment on these arrests, and government officials had not responded to requests for comment.

After the insurgents had attacked on Monday, July 24, parliament speaker Aden Mohamed Nur Madobe had called on the security services to look into and arrest al Shabaab collaborators.

Meanwhile, a military campaign by government forces and allied militiamen against al Shabaab has been on since last year and it has pushed the militants out of huge swathes of territory, but unfortunately, the group continues to organise consistent attacks.
