Nigerian Doctor Dies After Falling 10 Stories Inside an Elevator

The Nigerian news scene has been awash with reports of a female doctor getting killed by a faulty elevator inside General Hospital, a federally-owned hospital in Lagos State.

The deceased doctor, Vwaere Diaso had met her untimely death when she stepped into the hospital’s elevators after she got a call from a food delivery dispatch rider to come and collect her meal downstairs.

Prior to this incident, the hospital staff had been complaining about the lack of care, the hospital management had towards its workers. Several of Diaso’s colleagues have come out to social media to disclose that they had complained about the faulty elevator, but they had been threatened with dismissal letters if they proved too stubborn

According to reports, the elevator had crashed from the 10th floor to the ground floor not long after Diaso entered on it.

On assessing the scene, it was discovered that Diaso was lying in between the base of the elevator and the ground floor.

Professional engineers had been quickly called to come and dismantle the elevator as any sudden movement could lead to the elevator giving way and crushing Diaso but for some reasons known to the Engineers, they unhurriedly arrived about 40 mins after the call was placed.

After successfully extricating Diaso from the wreckage, the hospital where she worked at could not provide urgent emergency care for her.

It was reported that there was no blood available in the hospital to transfuse to the gravely injured Diaso after she was stuck in the elevator for an hour. On attempting to give her CPR, Diaso unfortunately gave up the ghost.

As is the norm in Nigeria, Diaso may likely not get the justice she deserves.
The individuals and bodies responsible for this accident will go scot free and might even go on to get awarded promotions/contracts in the nearest future.

Doctors had taken to the streets earlier today in Lagos State to protest the death of Diaso, who had lost her life to negligence.
