Tragedy struck at the General Hospital in Lagos when a faulty elevator claimed the life of Dr. Vware Diaso, a promising medical doctor undergoing her internship program. The Police Command in Lagos State has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the incident.

The late doctor, who lived on the 9th floor, tragically lost her life when the elevator, which had malfunctioned several times before, crashed from the 10th floor to the ground floor. Despite being rushed to the emergency ward, she couldn’t be saved.

A concerning aspect revealed during the investigation is that the elevator’s installation was carried out by a contractor without proper certification in elevator systems. Orivac Engineering, the contractor in question, lacked experience in elevator installation or maintenance. Even during the commissioning in June 2021, the elevator failed to work, which was attributed to inadequate power supply.

The Medical Guild, representing all medical doctors employed by the Lagos state government, expressed outrage over the substandard installation. The Guild called for those responsible, including the contractor, to be held accountable and face legal consequences.

The incident raises questions about negligence on the part of the hospital management and the government. The lack of proper maintenance despite prior malfunctions points to a disturbing disregard for the safety and lives of medical staff and patients.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has pledged a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of the tragedy and has offered his condolences to the victim’s family. The Medical Guild has urged the government to install a new elevator, this time by a certified installer, and ensure regular maintenance to prevent future incidents.

In light of this tragic event, many are left wondering who should be sued for negligence, as the incident occurred in a government hospital. The situation highlights a pressing issue with the government’s selection of contractors and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such avoidable disasters.

As citizens express their frustrations and fears, there is a call for justice to be served, ensuring that the memory of Dr. Vware Diaso is honored, and her family receives support in this difficult time. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for accountability and proper measures to safeguard lives in the country.
