Sweden defeated the United States in a wild penalty shootout, scoring 5-4 and eliminating the defending champions from the Women’s World Cup, following a 0-0 draw at the end of extra time.

The dramatic shootout on Sunday saw Lina Hurtig deliver the decisive spot-kick for Sweden. However, US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher put up a valiant effort, parrying the ball on the line, leading to a VAR review to confirm the result.

The match had a nail-biting moment when Sophia Smith of the USA had a chance to secure victory but sent the ball over the bar.

Sweden’s goalkeeper, Zecira Musovic, emerged as the hero, making a remarkable 11 saves during regular play to thwart the American offense and keep her team in contention.

Despite limited possession, the Swedes finally had a shot on goal in the 85th minute, thanks to substitute Sofia Jakobsson’s efforts, but it was saved by Alyssa Naeher.

The US, winners of the last two World Cups in France and Canada, experienced their earliest exit in the history of the tournament, having consistently reached the semi-finals or better in all previous eight editions.

Sweden, now set to face an impressive Japan side in the quarter-finals on Friday, has proven their resilience and determination on the world stage.
