Niger’s overthrown President, Mohamed Bazoum who has been in detention since being overthrown by members of his security guard last month has finally been seen by his doctor on Saturday, August 12, according to his entourage.

A member of his entourage had informed AFP that the president had been visited by his doctor today.
The source also added that the physician had also brought food for Bazoum, his wife and son who are being detained with him.

“He is fine, given the situation,” the entourage had revealed.

Prior to the doctor’s visit, fears had been increasing over the health of the former Niger leader and emphasis had been made on the detention conditions of democratically elected president, his wife and his 20-year-old son since the military grabbed power and took them captive on July 26.

The European Union and African Union have since joined in the clamour for the release of Bazoum.

A UN rights chief, Volker Turk had opined that Bazoum’s reported detention conditions could possibly be inhuman and his treatment while in detention could be in violation of international human rights law.

Antony Blinken, chief U.S diplomat had expressed sadness by the junta’s refusal to release Bazoum’s family as a “testament of benevolence”.

Well-known news channel, CNN broadcasted last week that Bazoum was being kept in an isolated place and was being force-fed dry rice and pasta by those who ousted him.
