UNILAG Students Give Varsity Deadline To Reverse Tuition Fee Increase

Students of the University of Lagos under the association of “Students’ Solidarity Group Against Fee Hike” have given the university management, a 48-hour deadline, to reverse the hike in the student’s tuition fees.

Femi Adeyeye, one of the leaders of the association had signed a statement the union released on Thursday, September 7, threatening to commence an immense protest if the management did nothing to meet the demand within the time given.

Recall that the University student leaders had previously met with the school authorities to discuss the tuition hike, back in July but the management had refused to budge on the matter.

This eventually led to a protest by the students’ leaders in Lagos State on Wednesday, September 6, during which police operatives shot at them.

The association had remarked that the intimidation and harassment they faced during yesterday’s protest from policemen would not in anyway, deter them from pursuing their demands against the injustice inflicted on their fellow students by the UNILAG management.

The statement read partly:

“We [the association] wish to maintain that our struggle is a battle for affordable, accessible education– a fundamental human right for all– not just for the fortunate few and this was clearly displayed to the world yesterday.”
