In Burkina Faso, a shocking revelation has come to light as three soldiers have been arrested and charged with plotting against the country’s ruling junta. This startling news was announced by the military prosecutor on Friday.

It all began when investigators received a tip-off last month about soldiers and former soldiers involved in intelligence activities. These individuals were allegedly scouting out the homes and other locations used by key figures in the junta, including Captain Ibrahim Traore, the country’s strongman. The goal of these individuals was to “destabilize” the transition, which refers to the interim military rule before promised elections.

Following extensive investigations, the three soldiers – Warrant Officer Windinmalegde Kabore, Sergeant Brice Ismael Ramde, and former corporal Sami Dah – were arrested and ordered to be detained by an examining magistrate. They are facing serious charges, including involvement in a military plot, breach of military orders, plotting against state security, criminal association, and endangerment, as stated by military prosecutor Major Alphonse Zorma.

What’s even more alarming is that one of the accused, Sami Dah, had previously been convicted in a plot against the state back in 2015. The individuals have reportedly admitted to the facts.

Burkina Faso, an impoverished Sahel state, has been marred by instability for decades. Last year, it witnessed two coups, driven by military discontent over the ongoing jihadist insurgency. Captain Ibrahim Traore, who took power at the young age of 34, has promised a return to democracy with presidential elections slated for July 2024.

However, skeptics argue that this may just be a facade, as power-hungry individuals may not willingly hand over control unless they are toppled by another coup. The country has suffered immensely due to the jihadist insurgency, with over 16,000 casualties and millions displaced from their homes.

The situation in Burkina Faso remains highly controversial, with many questioning the true intentions of those in power and the prospects for a stable and democratic future.
