Manchester United faced a harsh 3-1 defeat against Brighton in the Premier League, marking their third loss in just five matches this season. This hasn’t happened since way back in 1989-90.
Things looked promising initially at Old Trafford, but in the 20th minute, former United player Danny Welbeck scored for Brighton when he was inexplicably left unmarked in the penalty area.
United thought they had equalized just before halftime, with Rasmus Højlund nearly scoring on his full debut, but VAR ruled that the ball had gone out of play when Marcus Rashford made the pass to him.
Brighton seized this VAR decision to their advantage, scoring impressive goals by Pascal Gross and João Pedro in the second half, causing disappointment among Old Trafford’s spectators.
Hannibal Mejbri did pull one back for United with 18 minutes remaining, but Brighton managed to hold their lead comfortably, securing third place in the standings with 12 points from five games while United dropped to 12th with only six points.
This loss came after a turbulent week for Manchester United, with allegations against Brazilian forward Antony and ongoing issues between England winger Jadon Sancho and coach Erik ten Hag.
Despite promising performances from Højlund and Rashford’s attacking efforts, United’s defensive weaknesses were exposed, particularly by Welbeck, who scored against his former team.
Rashford came close to leveling the score on several occasions, but Brighton’s clinical finishing, especially by Gross, who has now scored four goals against United at Old Trafford, proved decisive.
United’s fans were not happy with the team’s performance, with some taking to social media to express their displeasure and even calling for Ten Hag’s dismissal.
