Napoli’s TikTok Controversy: Was It All Just Harmless Fun?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

In a rather bizarre turn of events, Napoli has found itself in hot water over a now-deleted social media post that they claim was never meant to mock their star player, Victor Osimhen from Nigeria. But, hold on to your seats, folks, because this story takes a twist as amusing as it is controversial.

The infamous TikTok post, which was promptly removed, depicted Osimhen missing a crucial penalty kick in a Serie A match, accompanied by a comically high-pitched voice pleading, “gimme penalty please.” This led to an explosive reaction from none other than Roberto Calenda, Osimhen’s agent, who didn’t take kindly to the jest and even threatened legal action against Napoli.

Calenda, in his most serious tone, tweeted, “A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news. We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor”

Now, here’s where things get even more puzzling. Napoli insists that they had no ill intentions whatsoever. They claim that the post was just a bit of light-hearted TikTok fun. In their Thursday statement, they stated, “Social media, in particular, TikTok, has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity, without wanting to, as in the case with Osimhen as a protagonist, have any intention of insult or derision. In any case, if Victor perceived any offense towards him, this was not what the club intended.”

But seriously, who’s buying that explanation? Osimhen, who practically carried Napoli to their first Serie A title in decades, took matters into his own hands by wiping out all Napoli-related posts from his Instagram account.

Even in the summer transfer window, Osimhen was like a hot cake, with clubs like Manchester United vying for his signature. But Napoli firmly rejected all offers, emphasizing his importance to the club. So, why the sudden attempt at ridiculing him?

John Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, didn’t take this lightly. He’s trying to get to the bottom of this peculiar situation. In his own words, “My office is trying to reach Victor Osimhen directly as well to understand first-hand the issues. We are committed to establishing the facts of the matter.”

Meanwhile, he’s enlisted the help of the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Ambassador to Italy for some good ol’ diplomatic damage control. It seems like this is no laughing matter on the diplomatic front either.

So, in the end, we’re left scratching our heads, wondering what Napoli was thinking with that demeaning video. After all, Osimhen was their golden boy, the hero who brought home the Serie A title. You’d think they’d treat him like a delicate egg. But alas, you can never tell with these Whites.
