EFCC Convicts Three in ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ Scandal, Highlighting Nigeria’s Fraud Struggles

The issue of internet fraud, often referred to as “yahoo yahoo,” has left a stain on Nigeria, tarnishing our reputation. In a recent development, the Enugu Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully convicted three individuals involved in such fraudulent activities.

The EFCC revealed in a statement that these individuals, namely Anyanwu Prince Uzoma, Okume Clinton Chukwuemeka, and Jude Onyekachi, faced charges related to impersonation and attempting to obtain money through deceptive means. Their legal proceedings began on September 29, 2023, before Justice Nnadi O. Dimgba of the Federal High Court, situated in Awka, Anambra State.

The singular count against them read as follows: “That you, Jude Onyekachi, sometime in the year 2023 at Enugu State, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, fraudulently impersonated one Wilfred Baston from the United States using an iPhone 11 through a counterfeit Google chat account, with the intent to gain an unfair advantage from unsuspecting foreign nationals. This act is in violation of Section 22(3) (a) & (b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015, and is punishable under Section 22(4) of the same Act.”

All three individuals pleaded guilty to their respective charges.

While one might hope that other states would follow suit and prosecute individuals involved in such fraudulent activities, there are unsettling rumors that suggest some law enforcement agencies may be colluding with these fraudsters to defraud people. It’s a shameful situation, but unfortunately, it’s a reality in Nigeria, where we encounter different and often troubling things every day.
