The European Union, EU nations had on Monday, October 23 approved a framework to foist penalties on members of the junta that grasped power in Niger Republic back in July.
The new framework will permit the EU to punish the individuals and entities responsible for actions that threaten the peace, stability and security of Niger, undermine the constitutional order, and allowed grave violations to human rights or international humanitarian law, according to the EU Council.
With this bodywork, the EU plans to imitate and reinforce any measures undertaken by the West African regional body, ECOWAS.
An EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had said that the EU had from the very start, condemned the coup d’état in Niger in the harshest terms.
“With today’s decision, the European Union reinforces its support to ECOWAS’ efforts and sends a clear message: military coups come at a costs.”
With the restrictive measures set up, the EU could limit the assets of selected entities and individuals and sanction them with travel bans.
