Former British prime minister Boris Johnson announced on Friday his upcoming role with television station GB News, in addition to his current position as a columnist for the Daily Mail newspaper.
“I’m going to be giving this remarkable new TV channel my unvarnished views on everything from Russia to China, the war in Ukraine, how we meet all those challenges, to the huge opportunities that lie ahead for us,” Johnson said on X.
Starting in early 2024, Johnson will undertake responsibilities as a presenter, programme maker, and commentator, playing a significant part in the coverage of Britain’s anticipated national election next year, as well as the United States’ elections.
The TV channel, which debuted in 2021, is known for its blend of news, opinion, and analysis, aligning more closely with U.S. networks such as Fox News than other British broadcasters. However, Britain’s broadcasting watchdog has previously found the station in breach of impartiality rules on several occasions.
Johnson, the key figure in the Brexit movement, assumed the role of prime minister in 2019, securing a substantial majority in the subsequent election. Nevertheless, he resigned in 2022 due to a series of scandals that led to the loss of support from numerous Conservative Party lawmakers.
Prior to his political career, Johnson had worked as a journalist, and he recently began contributing columns to the Daily Mail in June.
