According to local media reports, police in a Paris metro station shot and critically wounded a woman wearing a hijab on Tuesday morning. Commuters had reportedly raised concerns about her threatening behavior prior to the incident.
A police spokesperson informed Reuters that the officers had used their weapons out of concern for their own safety. The spokesperson could not specify the exact behavior of the “fully-veiled” woman at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France station that led to the use of force.
The fire service, responsible for providing emergency care, stated that the woman had sustained an abdominal gunshot wound. She was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, as confirmed by a fire brigade spokesperson.
Earlier reports from broadcaster BFM TV and daily newspaper Le Parisien cited police sources suggesting a potential Islamist “terrorist” motive behind the woman’s actions.
Following the incident, the metro station was evacuated, as confirmed by the police.
