The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools in Taraba State has ordered its members to postpone academic activities until further notice.
This directive is coming after the multiple stabbing to death of one of them, Mr Bassey Sardauna, a teacher at Model Government Day Secondary School by some ex-students of the institution.
In a press statement by the Chairman of the union, Sule Abasu, he had stated that until justice was served to its slain member, they will not be returning to the classrooms anytime soon.
“Fellow comrades, on a very sombre note, we received the surprising news of the death of our colleague who was stabbed to death.
“We wish to register our displeasure over this bestial devilish act where a teacher becomes prey to his/her students and other miscreants in the society.
“Therefore, until this issue is resolved, we will not be carrying out our respective duties as this incident touches upon one of us.”
The state government has meanwhile promised to properly look into the matter and ensure that no stone was left unturned to catch the culprits and mete out their punishments.
A press statement by the state Commissioner for Education, Augustina Godwin, said that some arrests have been made with investigations already launched.
The state government had also pledged to boost the security of schools by stationing both armed and unarmed security operatives to prevent further attacks.
