An old woman has been confirmed dead from a partial building collapse that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, November 16. According to reports, the incident had occurred in Oloto Street in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State.

The octogenarian passed away from the impact of the partial collapse, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency–LASEMA in a statement.

The agency, had however, said that no one was injured in the collapse.

The agency had also revealed that “an internal suspended beam in a room” had been the cause of-l the collapsed at about 7:45am due to the aging and poor maintenance of the structure.

“The building has been barred off and the Lagos State Building Control Agency–LASBCA, has been contacted,” LASEMA said, further adding that a search and rescue operation had begun.

The cases of building collapsing in Nigeria has become a serious pandemic that needs to be looked into as building collapses in the country have become too frequent. The cause of this can be alluded to poor construction regulation as well as substandard materials being used to erect structures across the country.

One of the most tragic recorded case of building collapse was the one where a 21-storey building gave way in Ikoyi, Lagos State back in November 2021. That particular incident had claimed the life of the owner and other workers.
