Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has declared his intention to directly appoint a new Supreme Court judge, following the rejection of his candidates by lawmakers.
Lopez Obrador, who is in the final year of his presidential term has frequently clashed with the court. He criticized it as corrupt and opposed to his agenda. He stated while addressing reporters at a government press conference, , “Today we will resolve this,” emphasizing that he is yet to finalize the selection.

Despite offering three nominees to senators last month, none received approval from the upper chamber of Congress, necessitating a two-thirds majority.
The president’s nominees for the position failed to garner the required support in the Senate, granting him the authority to personally appoint a new judge. The selected individual will join the 11-member tribunal and serve a 15-year term on the high court.
