Chelsea Unwrap Early Christmas Present: Fourth Place from Bottom

Christmas came early for Wolverhampton Wanderers fans, feasting on a 2-1 victory over a sluggish Chelsea side in the first Christmas Eve Premier League match since 1995. Chelsea, on the other hand, received a lump of coal in their stockings, their fourth defeat in six games leaving them stuck in 10th place.

It was a match of missed chances and defensive blunders, with Pochettino’s Wolves controlling possession but failing to finish early. Chelsea, meanwhile, looked like they were still unwrapping their gifts, stumbling and wasting golden opportunities.

The first half was a stocking full of near misses. Wolves’ Samedo and Chelsea’s Broja both fluffed chances, while Jackson seemed allergic to shooting on target for the Blues. Raheem Sterling even had a one-on-one with the Wolves keeper Sa, but his Christmas shot was saved!

Wolves almost scored on the stroke of halftime, Hwang Hee-chan blazing over from a great angle. But the second half brought the goals, and the first went to Wolves. Lemina, like a sneaky elf, headed home a Sarabia corner without even leaving his feet.

Chelsea brought on the new boy Nkunku, hoping he could work some Christmas magic. He almost did, hitting the line with a shot that left fans both relieved and terrified. Then, disaster struck for Chelsea. A late substitute named Doherty pounced on a cleared ball and calmly finished, doubling Wolves’ lead.

Just when it looked like Chelsea’s Christmas was ruined, Nkunku popped up with a last-minute header, giving them a flicker of hope. But it was too little, too late. The final whistle blew, and Wolves were left singing carols of victory, while Chelsea trudged off, their festive cheer replaced with the sour taste of defeat.

Merry Christmas, Wolves! Chelsea, better luck next year.
