A fierce debate has erupted in Nigeria surrounding the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, with fresh accusations against his wife, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, throwing his legacy into turmoil. Doyin Odebowale, a close confidante of the former governor, has made explosive claims about Mrs. Akeredolu’s alleged meddling in state affairs and her domineering influence over her husband.

Odebowale, who served as Akeredolu’s Special Assistant for over three decades, paints a picture of a governor weakened by his wife’s controlling nature. He alleges that Mrs. Akeredolu frequently interfered in government matters, even threatening a fellow advisor, Olubunmi Ademosu, with dire consequences. This meddling, Odebowale claims, extended to accusing Ms. Ademosu of harboring political ambitions to become deputy governor.

The Ex First Lady’s conduct has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many questioning her role and authority. Odebowale goes as far as to declare, “Marriage is a scam,” highlighting his frustration with the perceived undue influence Mrs. Akeredolu wielded over her husband. He further criticizes the very concept of a “First Lady” position, arguing that it grants unearned power and fosters a sense of entitlement.

Adding fuel to the fire is Odebowale’s assertion that Akeredolu’s death was kept hidden for an unexplained period. He claims to have been unaware of the passing until his phone was flooded with confirmation calls. This revelation has fueled speculation and conspiracy theories, further clouding the already murky waters surrounding the governor’s demise.

Amidst the controversy, Odebowale insists his own resignation was motivated by loyalty and not any wrongdoing. He denies any financial impropriety and maintains that his departure was a tribute to his deceased mentor. He simply states that he lacks the same dedication and zeal for serving under a new governor, highlighting the deep bond he shared with Akeredolu.

The unfolding drama has left Nigerians divided. Some sympathize with Odebowale and view his resignation as a principled stand against an overbearing First Lady. Others, however, remain skeptical, questioning the timing of his claims and the motives behind his resignation.

One thing is certain: the dust surrounding Akeredolu’s legacy is far from settled. The accusations against his wife have cast a dark shadow over his memory, prompting Nigerians to re-evaluate his reign and the role his family played in his administration. Only time will tell whether these controversies will fade or continue to haunt Akeredolu’s name in the annals of Nigerian history.
