Nigeria’s first female Major-General, Aderonke Kale, a woman who shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for others, has been laid to rest. On November 8th, 2023, at the age of 84, she bid farewell to this world, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking achievements and unwavering dedication.

Her son, Yemi Kale, another distinguished figure as the former Statistician-General of Nigeria, shared photos on his social media platform, giving the nation a glimpse into the final moments of honoring his mother’s remarkable journey.

According to the funeral arrangements he shared, Major General Kale was laid to rest on a Friday at St James Anglican Church in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. The following Saturday, a reception was held at the Omolayole Hall of the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre, where friends, family, and colleagues gathered to celebrate her life and mourn her loss.

But Major General Kale’s story wasn’t just about one family or one community. Her life was woven into the very fabric of Nigeria’s history. She was a trailblazer, a true pioneer who defied limitations and reached for the stars.

She was the first woman in Nigeria, and indeed in all of West Africa, to reach the prestigious rank of Major-General within the Nigerian Army. Not only that, she also became the first woman to hold the title of Commander of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps.

Her achievements weren’t just about titles or ranks; they were about breaking barriers and inspiring generations to come. She showed countless young girls, from all walks of life, that even the seemingly impossible could be achieved with hard work, determination, and a spirit that refused to be confined by societal norms.

As we say farewell to Major General Kale, we remember her not just as a military officer or a doctor, but as a symbol of hope and possibility. She was a woman who dared to dream big and who lived her life with purpose, leaving behind a legacy that will forever shine brightly in the annals of Nigerian history.
