A group of journalists in South Africa had yesterday, allegedly held a vigil late on Sunday for their peers that have been slain in Gaza during the ongoing war with Israel.

About 83 journalists and media workers have been murdered since the war broke out on October 2023, according to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists– CPJ on Sunday.

The CPJ had remarked that the Israel-Gaza war had become “the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began collecting data in 1992”.

“We are additionally paying homage to our colleagues in Sudan, in DR Congo and anyone really, who is being affected. However, as we all know and see, the journalists who are being killed in Gaza, it is unprecedented.” Deshnee Subramany, the vigil’s organiser, told a South African news channel SABC.

South Africa is widely known for being one of the fiercest critics of Israel in the ongoing Gaza war, and the South African government had even gone as far as dragging Isreal to court over genocide claims. A verdict has yet to be reached on this claims but the ICJ had warned Isreal to put measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.
