Obi, had in a press statement made by his media adviser, Mr Valentine Obineme, expressed sadness over the loss of precious lives, while urging the general public to stick strictly to engineering and building standards for people’s safety.

A block of shops still under construction at Ochanja Market in Onitsha had caved in on Monday night, killing about six persons, while over 20 persons were rescued.

Obi had said via his media adviser:
“I strongly believe that building collapses will be a thing of the past if we stick to standards and procedures. Only trained, licensed, and professional personnel should be put in charge of handling building projects, and the materials must meet project specifications.”

The tragic loss of lives and injuries sustained in the incident was also emphasized that the victims were individuals trying to make ends meet.

He also expressed his gratitude to those involved in liberating trapped victims, and asked the state government to look into the root cause of the building collapse.
