Two thugs in Lagos have been sentenced to one month in prison for imposing a N100 levy on pedestrians using the Yaba bridge. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this development on Wednesday via his official social media handle. The arrest followed a viral video showing the thugs extorting money from two women before allowing them to cross the bridge.

Operatives of the State Environmental Sanitation Corps apprehended the culprits on Thursday and promptly brought them before the magistrate court in Oshodi. Providing an update on the case, Commissioner Wahab stated, “The magistrate court convicted the defendants for breaching public peace and engaging in illegal money collection from individuals carrying goods.” Magistrate Oshikoya handed down a one-month prison sentence to the defendants.

Furthermore, Wahab disclosed that 17 individuals were also convicted for crossing the highway instead of using pedestrian bridges. “The court found them guilty and sentenced them to two months in prison, with an alternative fine of N7,000,” he added.
