Nigeria is greatly endowed with abundant natural and mineral resources, however the mining of these resources have left a bitter taste in the hearts of communities, where these mines are located due to repeated cases of pollution and illegal mining.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has taken a decisive step to address these concerns by suspending all mining operations in the state until comprehensive data of miners is compiled. This directive came during a meeting with members of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Benue Chapter, in Makurdi.

Governor Alia emphasized the urgent need for the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to swiftly gather data on all miners, citing security threats and environmental contamination as compelling reasons for this action. He expressed particular concern over the pollution of water sources in areas like Kwande, adversely affecting residents’ well-being.

The governor underscored his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the lives and property of citizens. He called upon security agencies and the joint task force on illegal mining to ensure compliance and enhance revenue generation for the state.

Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim, clarified that the governor’s intention was not to curtail mining activities but to curb illegal practices. As the chairman of MIREMCO, Mr. Mnyim highlighted the state’s proactive approach in scrutinizing the mining sector through a comprehensive checklist.

John Tersugh, chair of the Benue miners’ association, pledged full cooperation with the government to sanitize the mining industry. Simon Ogwu, representing the Federal Ministry of Mining and Solid Minerals, assured support for the state’s efforts to regulate mining activities.

Benjamin Nyior and Dennis Tarhemba, representing the mining community, advocated for a conducive working environment and necessary equipment to optimize their operations. Additionally, members of the association urged the governor to address issues of multiple taxation and provide essential mining equipment to boost revenue generation in Benue State.
