A container ship collided into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning, at about 1am causing it to snap in a few places and plunge into the river below.
As a result of this accident, several vehicles fell into the chilly waters, and rescuers are now searching for at least seven people.
It has been reported by a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that there are vehicles in the water, where the temperature was about 47 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius) in the early hours of Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Maryland Governor Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency and announced that he was working to get federal resources deployed to the scene.
The FBI is reportedly also on the scene.
The Synergy Marine Group — which owns and manages the ship, The Dali which caused the accident — had confirmed that the vessel hit a pillar of the bridge at about 1:30 a.m. while two pilots were in control. It remarked that all crew members, including the pilots, were accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries.
The Dali was en-route to Colombo, Sri Lanka from Baltimore, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic.
The ship is about 985 feet (300 meters) long and about 157 feet (48 meters) wide, according to the website.
At the time of writing this report, two people have been rescued from the waters under the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Among the recused individuals, one in serious condition, according to Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace.
The Baltimore Police Commissioner, Richard Worley has stated that terrorism does not appear to have been a factor in the collapse of the bridge that fell into Baltimore harbor after a container ship crashed into it.
