President Muhammadu Buhari has sent an Executive Bill to the Senate, asking for an extension of the retirement age for teachers from age 60 to age 65 following the approval of the upward review of the retirement age of teachers and their years of service five months ago.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan read the letter on the floor of the Senate at today’s plenary. He also explained to the floor that the essence of the bill is to harmonize the retirement age for teachers in Nigeria.

Lawan shared that the motion to increase service years for teachers is pursuant to section 58(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The bill also includes an increase in the possible years of service from 35 to 40 years.

While the bill has gone through the first reading, Lawan also during the plenary, referred to Buhari’s request for confirmation of Maj. Gen. Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to Senate Committees on Defense and Army.

The Defense Committee led by Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto), was mandated to lead the screening for the newly appointed COAS.

Further details of the legislation will be discussed on another legislative day when the lawmakers begin the process of its passage.
