President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria issued a strong message to West African nations this week, urging them to strengthen ties and resist forces seeking to tear the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) apart.

Tinubu, who currently holds the chairmanship of ECOWAS, spoke at the inauguration of the regional parliament. He warned member states against becoming “passive spectators” while the community faces potential “disintegration.”

A Call for Solidarity

The President emphasized the importance of regional unity for tackling challenges and fostering prosperity. He stressed that ECOWAS member states cannot afford to be divided and must actively work towards a “common destiny and purpose.”

Strengthening the Parliament

Tinubu also addressed the role of the ECOWAS Parliament in promoting regional democracy. He acknowledged the Parliament’s desire for increased power, including the possibility of direct elections by citizens. The President expressed support for this proposal, believing it aligns with democratic principles and enhances citizen participation.

Nigeria’s Commitment

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to ECOWAS and its goals. He pledged continued support for the Parliament and highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to construct a permanent headquarters complex for ECOWAS institutions in Abuja.

The Road Ahead

The President’s message underscores potential internal conflicts within ECOWAS. While details of these “forces” seeking division are not explicitly mentioned, Tinubu’s call for unity suggests underlying tensions. The success of ECOWAS, as envisioned by Tinubu, hinges on member states’ willingness to collaborate and address shared challenges as a united front.

This situation can be seen as both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge lies in overcoming internal divisions and finding common ground. However, the opportunity lies in building a stronger, more effective ECOWAS that benefits all West African nations.
