Electricity Tariff Increase Sparks Controversy

The recent decision by the federal government to hike electricity tariffs has stirred considerable debate and concern among Nigerians. This move, spearheaded by Mr. Adelabu and the federal government, signals a shift away from subsidy reliance in the electricity sector, aiming to create a more sustainable economy.

Mr. Adelabu had earlier contended that Nigerians pay comparatively low electricity tariffs compared to neighboring countries, advocating for a restructuring of the sector to bolster the Nigerian economy.

Flowing from this, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) unveiled new tariff rates, particularly affecting Band A customers who receive 20 hours of daily electricity supply. This announcement has ignited a flurry of reactions from the public.

The Northern elders, for instance, expressed alarm over the burdensome impact of the tariff increase on average Nigerians. They highlighted the exorbitant costs, citing that 24-hour electricity would now amount to a staggering N5,400 per day, posing significant financial strain on households already grappling with economic hardship.

Similarly, former lawmakers, Senator Andrew Uchendu and Honourable Dachung Bagos, acknowledged the rationale behind the NERC’s decision but criticized its timing, suggesting that the implementation coincided unfavorably with the recent removal of fuel subsidies. They argued that the government should have prioritized measures to mitigate the adverse effects of subsidy removal before introducing additional tariff adjustments.

Critics have accused the government of insensitivity and exploitation, condemning the tariff hike as unjust and indicative of a disconnect between the government and the populace. They assert that rather than implementing policies to alleviate citizen suffering, the government has chosen to exacerbate economic hardships, betraying the trust of the people they serve.

In light of these concerns, calls for the government to reconsider the tariff increase and prioritize the welfare of Nigerians have intensified. Citizens are urged to demand accountability from their leaders, emphasizing the government’s duty to serve the interests of the people and not exploit them for personal gain.
