Edo State’s Cultural Legacy Earns Recognition

The Federal Government of Nigeria appointed Governor Obaseki due to Edo State’s remarkable achievements in promoting Nigerian culture, arts, and historical treasures.

A statement released by the Edo State government highlighted Edo’s long-standing significance: “Edo state and its capital city, Benin City, have been a main heritage and cultural artistic hub in Nigeria for centuries.” The statement further emphasized Governor Obaseki’s dedication to the arts, noting his “strong desire to support arts and culture.”

Historic First for Sub-National Leadership

Governor Obaseki’s appointment marks a significant moment. The statement clarifies, “This is the very first time a sub-national [government] is leading the Nigerian delegation to such an event.”

Collaboration Beyond Art

The exhibition offers an opportunity for broader cultural exchange. The statement mentions that Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto region, alongside the board of the Museum of West African Arts, will welcome Governor Obaseki and the Nigerian delegation at the pavilion.

Looking beyond the art exhibition, the statement reveals Edo State’s intent to learn from the Veneto region’s successful development model. The Veneto is known for its “strong export-oriented entrepreneurship in traditional economic sectors.”

This cultural exchange extends into a potential economic partnership. The statement concludes by mentioning a planned memorandum of understanding between the Edo State government and the Veneto region. This agreement aims to foster collaboration in sociocultural and economic spheres, ultimately benefiting the growth, development, and productivity of Edo State.
