World No. 1 Novak Djokovic faced another setback in the 2024 tennis season as he was defeated by Casper Ruud in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. The loss marks Djokovic’s continued struggle to clinch a title or even reach a final this year, a departure from his usual dominance in the men’s game.

Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic admitted to experiencing a fluctuating form, labeling his season thus far as “not a great season at all.” The Serbian icon’s journey this year has been marred by defeats to rising talents like Alex de Minaur, Jannik Sinner, and Luca Nardi, in addition to Ruud’s recent triumph.

Despite acknowledging the challenges faced, Djokovic remains hopeful of an upward trajectory in his results, aiming to build upon his performances in upcoming tournaments. While the Monte Carlo loss adds to his slow start, Djokovic draws parallels to previous seasons where he faced similar struggles before bouncing back.

Ruud’s victory over Djokovic comes as a significant achievement for the Norwegian, marking his first win against the 24-time major winner after five unsuccessful attempts. Ruud attributed part of his success to recognizing Djokovic’s occasional vulnerability, citing previous losses by other players as a source of motivation.

The emergence of young talents like Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz adds depth to the men’s tour, but Djokovic continues to set the standard despite recent challenges. Ruud acknowledges the significance of defeating Djokovic, highlighting the Serbian’s status as one of the all-time greats in tennis.

As Djokovic navigates through a turbulent start to the season, his resilience and determination will be tested as he aims to reclaim his dominant form on the ATP tour. Meanwhile, Ruud’s triumph serves as a reminder of the competitive landscape and the potential for upsets in the world of tennis.
