A fire incident at the Afam power generating station on Monday morning led to a collapse of the national grid, causing an unexpected loss of 25 MW and 305 MW, respectively.

However by afternoon, The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced it has completely restored the national electricity grid that had collapsed. This was disclosed in a statement released by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.

Earlier that day, Nigeria’s electricity grid collapsed, plunging many cities into darkness.

Officials reported that the collapse occurred as generation fell to 64.70 megawatts.

This latest incident follows a national grid collapse that occurred in March, less than a month prior.

National grid fully restored says TCN

According to TCN’s statement,

“At 02:41 hrs on April 15, 2024, a fire broke out at the Afam V 330kV busbar coupler, causing units at Afam III and Afam VI to trip,” Ms. Mbah stated.

She noted that the event resulted in a loss of 25 MW and 305 MW, destabilizing the grid and causing a partial collapse.

During the incident, Ibom Power plant was disconnected from the grid, providing power to parts of the Port Harcourt region, thus mitigating the impact of the disturbance.

“TCN confirms that the affected grid section has been fully restored and stabilized.

“TCN reiterates its dedication to improving the resilience and reliability of the national grid and commits to investing in measures to strengthen grid infrastructure,” she added.
