Borussia Dortmund etched their name into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since their runner-up finish under Jürgen Klopp in 2013, after a pulsating 4-2 victory over Atlético Madrid sealed a 5-4 aggregate triumph.

The match ignited from the opening minutes as both sides squandered early opportunities to seize the lead. Ian Maatsen’s precise pass found Marcel Sabitzer in a promising position, only for César Azpilicueta to produce a crucial block for Atlético. Moments later, Antoine Griezmann’s clever header released Álvaro Morata, but the striker’s delicate chip narrowly missed the target.

Despite Dortmund enjoying the lion’s share of possession and chances, they struggled to test Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak until the 33rd minute. Mats Hummels’ exquisite long ball found Julian Brandt, who clinically finished to put Dortmund ahead on the night. The hosts doubled their lead six minutes later when Sabitzer and Maatsen combined once again, with the latter firing a precise shot past Oblak.

Diego Simeone’s side responded immediately after the break, with Mario Hermoso nodding home from a corner to halve the deficit. Ángel Correa then missed a gilt-edged chance to restore parity before redeeming himself with a thunderous strike off the crossbar to give Atlético the lead on the night.

However, Dortmund refused to be deterred and swiftly regained control of the tie. Sabitzer’s pinpoint cross found Niclas Füllkrug, who headed home to level the scores on the night. The German side then surged ahead once more as Sabitzer capitalized on a loose ball to unleash a powerful strike into the bottom corner.

Despite Oblak’s heroics to keep Atlético in the contest, Dortmund held firm to secure victory and their passage to the semi-finals. The win marked their ninth European tie success after losing the first leg away, underlining the importance of home advantage for Edin Terzić’s men.

The thrilling encounter showcased Dortmund’s resilience and attacking prowess, as they overcame a resilient Atlético side to secure a historic semi-final berth in the Champions League. With their sights set on European glory, Dortmund will look to build on this momentum as they await their semi-final opponents with anticipation and determination.
