At the time of this press report, one person has been killed and eight others, wounded in an overnight explosion at an Iraqi military base accommodating a union of pro-Iranian armed groups.

The explosion had hit the Kalsu military base in Babylon province, south of Baghdad, where Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces, or Hashed al-Shaabi, had been stationed.

This attack is coming days after Iran launched an uncommon assault on Israel which had in turn allegedly responded with a drone strike on the Islamic republic, amidst the tensions of the ongoing Israel-Gaza war.

The Iraqi security forces media unit have said that an explosion and a fire had hit the Kalsu base early Saturday morning, leaving one person dead and eight others wounded.

But the Air defence command had said in a statement that there were no drones or combat aircraft in the airspace of Babylon province before or during the explosion.

Security sources have yet to say who may have been behind the attack.

Iraq’s foreign ministry expressed strong concern on Friday over the blast in Iran, warning of the risks of military escalation which threatens security and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, the US military Central Command had debunked the news that the United States had conducted air strike in Iraq in Saturday.

More details to come…
